It’s always a pleasure to welcome back the Pavel Haas Quartet — especially for a program representing three generations of Czech/Moravian tradition. These works also stand as a final work for these composers, or arrive with a late creative burst. We start with Haas’ last completed quartet, written shortly before the outbreak of World War II. It marries modernist harmonies with folk-inspired melodies. Janáček was fascinated with psychological drama and human emotion, inspiring him to compose late in life a string quartet based on the Kreutzer Sonata. The final work of the night is Dvořák’s last string quartet which blends American-influenced freshness with mature Czech style.
